I came across it so randomly on youtube, I was actually reading about Jonathan Edwards (1703 one, not the psychic guy) and I saw a link to a clip in Pollyanna where the preacher is impersonating Edwards Link to that is on the MY GOD page. Anyways, I didn’t think anyone had the clips from this movie on youtube! It was hard enough just to find the VHS for this movie, since it was made in 1960.
These are some of my favorite clips and my favorite songs! I memorized and sang each song so much, I still remember every word. I just loved that little yellow cottage in “Buela” and how everyone knew everyone (and linked to sing about it too) I loved Hailey Mills and that yellow dress was my favorite! I remember trying to sew one just like it too with my grandma..(but we never finished). I don’t care if my favorite song “femininity” is gender stereotyping to the core, at least back they had two separate genders! I think it’s cute. I think movies from my youth had more of an impression on me than I realized. If you watch the whole movie…some of the things she says and does would remind you a lot of me (if you knew me) but maybe we all do that to a certain extent , maybe subconsciously with our favorite things. (Aha, that’s why God should be one of our favorite things, because then we would emulate Him without even trying!) John Piper has alto say about making God the thing you praise in life, cause you like “really gotta mean it” not just make him the center of your life but instead feel that “want and need” to praise Him, that’s what God wants out of all of us. So Piper (reminds me of cute Piper Palin) also has an article on what to do when you don’t desire God. All on his awesome site at desiringgod.org in the blog section. I got off topic, but Go finds a way to fit into everything these days…even the simplest little post on Disney Movies. I was trying to make it just about me, no preaching or anything…But those words, “about me” are meaningless and sound so silly since nothing is about me, I belong to God, and everything in life should be and can be a way of praising God. At least I think that’s what I’m learning now. I’m reading “Desiring God” by John Piper and the Bible and a little Beth Moore right now, and I feel like I’m on to something, something I haven’t grasped or picked up on before about God that will change my life even more. We shall see. It will be interesting to look back and see if my views on God have developed and grown in Him or if I have just been changing my thought process according to which book I am currently reading. I don’t think I’m the type to “buy” into charismatic writers..I may be in life, but if it’s in front of me on paper, I think I ruminate over it long enough. Speaking of “charisma,” Tom Hamilton sure had it in this movie! First clip below, makes me think it’s no coincidence that the guys I dated tended to resemble Tom Hamilton, or at least I tried to get as close to that as possible…lol. And so maybe my favorite color also turned out to be yellow, I’m still not impressionable at all!
“On the front Porch”, by Burt Ives
This song I sang to her a lot during that month..I think she liked the tune of it.
Three creaky wooden stairs
Those squeaky rocking chairs
The well worn welcome mat
The lattice vines
The happy timesAll I want to do
When the day is through
Is linger here on the front porch
With you
From the wicker swing
While the night birds sing
We’ll watch the fireflies sparkin’
Do some sparkin’ too
How the hours fly
As the moon drifts by –
How sweet the air
As we stare
At the sight
Oh! How I love to linger here like this
Hold your hand, and steal a kiss
Or two
On the front porch with youAll I want to do
When the day is through
Is linger here on the front porch
With you
From the wicker swing
While the night birds sing
We’ll watch the fireflies sparkin’
Do some sparkin’ too
(Some sparkin’ too!)
How the hours fly
As the moon drifts by –
How sweet the air
As we stare
At the sightOh! How I love to linger here like this
Hold your hand, and steal a kiss
Or two
On the front porch with you
